One such term of crucial importance is CIF.
What is CIF? How to Check Your SBI Account CIF Number
CIF stands for Customer Information File. As is quite clear from the name, it is a unique number associated with a computerized file, which contains all relevant personal as well as account related details of a customer of the respective bank. These details are accessible only by the servicing bank & provided by the customer himself. It is important to note that the CIF is NOT the customer’s account number in a particular bank. You may also note that even if the account is transferred from one branch to another, the CIF code does not change. Only the home branch of the CIF code changes.
Why is the CIF important?
The CIF is basically the bank’s key to access all the information pertaining to its customer. These details are provided by the customer himself by means of a KYC form where KYC stands for “Know Your Customer”. This includes personal details such as the name, gender, age, address, photo id, employment details, marital status as well as account related details and credit relationships. Hence, it is crucial for the customer to provide only correct information while opening a bank account. In addition, it is the bank’s responsibility to maintain the security of such information by ensuring authorized usage of the customer’s data.
Well, the banks analyze study & use the associated information for offering their products to customers based on profiling. They use it to up-sell as well as cross-sell the bank’s current & new products or services.
Also, this information is updated on a daily basis so that the accuracy of the records is maintained. CIF also registers the types of accounts held by an individual, the transactions performed by him/her as well as the balance maintained. In nutshell, it is used to keep track of the financial activities of the customer with the bank.
As per the latest guidelines from RBI, every bank has its own format for the CIF number and only one is allocated to each customer. Initially, a customer could be assigned various CIF numbers for multiple accounts. However, now a user can have multiple accounts in a bank but he shall have only one CIF number with that particular bank. The CIF number is also used as an Identification number for mobile as well as internet banking.
For instance, SBI has an 11 digit CIF no. whereas Central Bank of India has a 10 digit CIF no. Similarly, HDFC has an 8 digit CIF no. while Axis Bank has a 4 digit CIF no.
